The need to manage and maintain beaches can arise from a variety of factors, such as reducing the risk of flooding or erosion or improving the natural environment. A Beach Management Plan (BMP) is an important reference document containing all the relevant information about the beach in question and defining a detailed strategy to achieve the agreed management policies. The objectives of the BMP are normally defined in an appropriate strategy or shoreline management plan. A BMP is now a pre-requisite for obtaining Flood Defence Grant in Aid from the Environment Agency for ongoing beach management works to deliver flood and coastal erosion protection.
BMPs are consistent with recommendations from the North Solent Shoreline Management Plan which considers the community, economy and environment.
